Why Conwy Works So Well at Christmas

Few places in Britain look more like a Christmas card than Conwy. The castle and town walls are lit after dark, the narrow streets inside the walls are lined with independent shops rather than chains, and the pubs and restaurants are close enough together that a festive evening out never involves more than a short walk. It is compact, walkable and full of character, which makes it ideal for a day of Christmas shopping, a winter break or a festive meal with a view of the estuary.

Winter is also when Conwy is at its quietest. The summer crowds are long gone, the castle has room to breathe, and a walk along the town walls on a crisp December morning, with snow on the Carneddau in the distance, is one of the best free experiences in North Wales.

Christmas Events in Conwy 2026

Dates below are the latest we could confirm. Smaller events and late-night shopping evenings are usually announced in November, so check with organisers before you travel.

Conwy @ Christmas, harbour Christmas fair (late November 2026). A heated marquee on the quayside beneath the castle, filled with UK makers, artisans and gift traders. Entry is free and it runs 10am to 5pm. The organiser lists it for the weekend of 19 to 23 November 2026; check their final dates before travelling. It is a good place to start your Christmas shopping, and the quay pubs and cafes are right next door.

Conwy Half Marathon (Sunday 15 November 2026). Not a Christmas event as such, but it fills the town in mid-November. Expect road closures around the quay on race morning. See our half marathon guide.

Winterfest and the torchlit parade (early December, date to be confirmed). In recent years Conwy has held a medieval-themed Winterfest with street performers, minstrels and late-night shopping, ending in a torchlit parade through the walled town. It has not run every year and has occasionally been called off for weather, so look out for the announcement from the town's events organisers.

Christmas at Conwy Castle. Cadw usually runs a family event at the castle in December. In 2025 it was a Christmas trail around the towers and battlements, helping the castle cook find the ingredients for the King's Christmas feast. Check Cadw's events listings for this year's plans.

Nearby. Llandudno, four miles away, has its own Christmas market and festive events, and a Boxing Day swim on the seafront is a long-standing tradition on the North Wales coast.

Castle and Attractions Over Christmas

Conwy Castle stays open through the winter, on reduced hours of 10am to 4pm from 1 November to 28 February, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It is closed on 24, 25 and 26 December and on 1 January. Winter is a great time to visit: the towers are quieter, the light is low and golden, and from 1 November dogs on short leads are allowed on the ground-floor levels.

Plas Mawr, the Elizabethan town house on High Street, closes for the winter from 2 November until the end of February, so if it is on your list, visit before November. Aberconwy House and the Smallest House in Britain also keep seasonal hours, so check before you go.

Outdoors, the Conwy Mountain walk and RSPB Conwy are both excellent in winter. The reserve is at its best for wildfowl in the colder months.

Festive Food and Drink

Conwy mussels are in season from September to April, so December is a fine time to try them on the quay. Many of the town's restaurants and pubs run Christmas menus and party nights, and the best tables go early, so book well ahead for December weekends and Christmas week. Start with our guides to the best restaurants, pubs and cafes in Conwy. On a cold afternoon, a real ale by an open fire in one of the old inns inside the walls is hard to beat.

Christmas Shopping in Conwy

The streets inside the walls, especially High Street, Castle Street and the lanes around Lancaster Square, are full of independent shops, galleries, delis and gift shops. It is the place to find something you won't see on every high street: Welsh crafts, local food and drink, art and books. Combine a browse with the harbour Christmas fair in late November and you can get a good chunk of your shopping done in a day.

Tips for a Winter Visit

Days are short in December, with darkness by about 4pm, so plan the castle and the walls for the morning and save the shops, pubs and lights for the late afternoon. Bring warm, waterproof layers: the wall walk and castle towers are exposed to the wind off the estuary. Parking is much easier than in summer, but Saturday afternoons in the run-up to Christmas still get busy, so see our parking guide or come by train; Conwy station is inside the walls. If the weather turns, our Conwy in the rain guide has ideas, and our Conwy town map shows how everything fits together.
