Why Conwy Works Well for Dogs
Conwy is a genuinely dog-friendly destination. The town is compact and walkable, there are excellent off-lead areas within easy reach, and the local culture is generally welcoming towards well-behaved dogs. The castle grounds, the quayside, the mountain and the valley walks all accommodate dogs on leads, and many of the area's pubs and cafes are happy to welcome dogs inside or at least in their outdoor seating areas.
The main heritage sites — the castle interior, Plas Mawr and Aberconwy House — do not permit dogs inside, though you can leave dogs outside while one adult goes in. The exterior of the castle walls and the lower sections of the town walls are generally accessible with dogs. The quayside and all the outdoor spaces are fully dog-friendly.
Best Walks for Dogs Near Conwy
Conwy Mountain is the top dog-walking destination in the area. The 244-metre summit is reached by well-defined paths from the town and the circular walk covers around six to seven kilometres of open hillside and ridge. Dogs can be let off the lead on much of the mountain, though care is needed near the summit ridge where livestock may be present.
The Sychnant Pass area west of Conwy offers more open moorland walking. The Conwy Valley walks along the river to the south of the town are flatter and suitable for dogs who prefer gentler terrain. The riverside path from Conwy towards Tal-y-Cafn passes through varied scenery and is particularly pleasant in autumn.
Dog-Friendly Pubs and Cafes
Several pubs and cafes in Conwy go out of their way to welcome dogs. The Albion Ale House on Upper Gate Street takes dog-friendliness seriously: dogs are welcome throughout, and the pub runs its own dog menu. Cantîn café provides dog beds, treats and fresh water from a dedicated “Mut Hut” outside, with a covered outdoor dining area where owners and dogs can settle comfortably together. Parisella’s Ice Cream on the quayside offers doggy ice cream and keeps water bowls outside for four-legged customers. Out in the Conwy Valley, the Groes Inn is a dog-friendly country inn with pet-friendly treats and easy access to walking trails. The RSPB Conwy cafe also welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating area.

A number of Conwy's guest houses, B&Bs and holiday cottages in the surrounding area accept dogs, though this varies by property and often attracts a supplement. It is essential to check and confirm the dog policy when booking. The Quay Hotel & Spa at Conwy Marina is specifically pet-friendly and offers rooms with estuary views that make for a memorable stay for owners and dogs alike.
