Are you planning on a trip to North Wales? What this incredible country lacks in size, it makes up for with its local produce, tasty national dishes, and some of the best bakery you’ll get in the whole of the UK.

The traditional foods of Wales go back many years and reflect the people’s talent of rustling up something great from just a few ingredients. There are plenty of places to eat Conwy has to offer you – where you can find this unique food.

These are the Welsh foods you must try whilst visiting:

Welsh Rarebit

Welsh Rarebit was originally known as Welsh Rabbit despite the lack of meat. This is, to put simply, posh cheese on toast. It is made of a mixture including cheese, eggs, milk, flour, welsh ale, and mustard. It’s, as the Welsh say, absolutely lush.

Glamorgan Sausage

Again, there is no meat involved here. This is the perfect veggie alternative to the breakfast banger. Glamorgan sausages are made of leeks, cheese and breadcrumbs.

Bara Brith

The star of afternoon tea in Wales. Bara Brith is a traditional fruit loaf with its own unique flavour – apparently, the addition of half a pot of tea into the mix many years ago created this Welsh wonder. Spread on some butter and have a taste.

Conwy Mussels

Our town is a medieval fishing village in North Wales, and is home to what people call ‘the best mussels they have ever tasted’. As Conwy sits on an estuary, the freshwater from the Afon Conwy and the salty water from the sea meet, giving the mussels their edge. These are a seasonal delight, so double check when you’re in town.

Laverbread

Laverbread is also known as the Welshman’s Caviar. It’s either considered a luxurious dish served on toast and seafood, or it could be the weird slimy stuff that’s pushed to the side of the plate – why not figure it out for yourself. It has an intense flavour of the sea, and apparently contains high levels of iron to purify your blood.

Salt Marsh Lamb

This is the champion of meats in Wales. The lambs graze on the sea marsh plants, eating as much samphire as they do grass. They are free-roaming, so are much leaner than their fenced-in friends. This all gives them their delicate and luxurious flavour.
